The Disability Trust Supported Independent Living clients in one of our Lake Macquarie residential homes have been getting their hands dirty helping to create a sensory garden for their Mount Hutton home. The garden for the nine residents, who previously lived in the Stockton Residential centre, is part of an ongoing partnership between the Royal Botanic Gardens and Compass Housing.
Gardens’ Community Greening Officer Brenden Moore, a Biripi man from Taree, has been working with project and sustainability manager for Compass Housing Jandy McCandless to create a secure space that helps to foster a connection between the residents and the natural world. By focussing on edible plants such as salads, fruit, herbs and bush tucker, the garden seeks to improve nutrition as well as providing an opportunity for social interaction and better local inclusion.
