On Saturday, 21 March 2020 we celebrated World Down Syndrome Day with Elizabeth.
“On this day, people all around the world celebrate the lives and achievements of people with Down Syndrome, creating a global voice, advocating for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down Syndrome."
Elizabeth is a wonderful advocate and is involved with the Down Syndrome Advisory Network in the ACT. “I am the ACT and region representative of the Down Syndrome Advisory Network. I meet with the other representatives from around Australia on a monthly basis via Zoom meetings, we have agenda items that we are asked to research and provide our opinions. We are all people with Down Syndrome and provide advice to Down Syndrome Australia on many topics which have included inclusive education, employment and reviewing resources for the new Down Syndrome Australia website and providing feedback. I have really enjoyed my time on the DSAN as I have met other people with Down Syndrome from around Australia and discussed things that are important to us. I was very pleased to have been given this opportunity through the ACT Down Syndrome Association.”
This year’s theme for World Down Syndrome Day is “We Decide” and we asked Elizabeth what this means to her. “I believe that this means that I make all the decisions in my life. I may ask and receive advice from my family and other trusted people in my life, but ultimately I make the final decision.”
Elizabeth has been attending a variety of Disability Trust programs since she finished school in 2015 including Club Trust 3 days per week, Night Owls Social Group, Indoor Sports, 1:1 Swimming and attending Raiders home games and OT services. Her favourite activity is the Night Owls Social Group as she really enjoys catching up with friends, having dinner and most of all dancing. She is a huge fan of the Canberra Raiders and hopes to see them win the grand final this year. Elizabeth also has a job at The Big Green Cup Café in Bungendore which she really enjoys.
