When Paul came to Workskills in 2016, he was not sure what he wanted to do. He had recently completed Cert III in Account Administration, but wasn’t sure that was where his talents lay. In consideration of the employment opportunities in the community services sector and Paul’s interest in helping vulnerable people, he was encouraged to consider a course in Community Services.
Workskills supported Paul to complete a First Aid Course and a Certificate IV in Community Services at Shellharbour TAFE. Paul was happy with the course and travelled from Mittagong to Shellharbour to complete both the Cert IV in Community Services (and then the Diploma in the same course in the following year). After completing these courses, Paul wanted to focus on the Mental Health sector and completed a Cert IV in Mental Health at Wollongong TAFE in 2018.
Paul was required to undertake work placement for this course and was given the opportunity to undertake this with Flourish Australia in Wollongong. During this placement Paul impressed his supervisors and was encouraged to put in an expression of interest for a Mental Health Peer Support Worker position. Paul was successful in the gaining this position and has been working at Flourish Australia for several months helping people manage their health barriers through learnt skills and lived experience.
