The Disability Trust and Destination Wollongong come together to make Wollongong an accessible city for all.
The two organisations have signed a memorandum of understanding that aims to enhance Wollongong’s reputation as a great place for everyone to live and visit, and increase access to cycling for people with a disability.
This is an exciting partnership for The Disability Trust, creating opportunities to support local organisations to become more accessible and inclusive for people with disability, opening up opportunities for growth in demand from within the local community as well as through tourism operators.
We are also working with Destination Wollongong on exciting plans to increase the accessibility of cycling for people with disability, strengthening Wollongong’s position as a UCI Bike City of international significance.
Our Chief Operating Officer, Ed Birt, sees the partnership as a great opportunity to grow the region and to increase the potential of the Trust’s ‘CycleAbility’ program, designed for people with disability to enjoy cycling.
“We are delighted to support local businesses to grow by enhancing their accessibility,” Ed said.
“Wollongong has some fantastic biking infrastructure already, and this is only going to improve into the future. We are keen to support as many people as possible to enjoy cycling, and our CycleAbility program is doing just that.”
Tania Brown, Chair of Destination Wollongong said the partnership would only heighten Wollongong’s status as a destination of choice. “Wollongong has so much visitor potential, which has great flow on economic impacts for local businesses and for local employment,” Ms Brown said. "Adding another string to our bow as a great place to visit for people with disability is something we are very keen to promote.”
The partnership is very timely, with the UCI Road World Championships due to be held in Wollongong from the 18th-25th September 2022. "As a UCI Bike City, we are also particularly excited about the CycleAbility program and the opportunity to showcase the great work of The Disability Trust on the world stage as we move towards September 2022."
