This year our team of staff and participants from Wyndarra Way Group Home participated in the Great Illawarra Walk on Saturday 7th of March. The walk is a community event supporting research into the rare brain disease Vanishing White Matter. This event is very close to our hearts as we have a participant in the group home also living with the disease. He inspired us to participate in the walk due to his strength and courage he has living with vanishing white matter disease. Even though he has limitations on what he can do as a person, he can see past this and lives each day to the limit, with a smile on his face day in day out and inspiring us all to live our lives to the maximum of our potential. We saw this walk as a small gesture to show our support for this great cause.
Starting at Shellharbour the entire walk is around 42kms. It really was an amazing, challenging, eye opening day but the effort by everyone was nothing short of extraordinary. There were times on the walk where it was getting very tough but we all encouraged each other to keep going. There were a few sore bodies on Saturday night but it was all more than worth it. The boys did amazing and had lots of fun! We were very proud of our fundraising efforts as well and ended up raising well over $1000 so we were chuffed.
The community engagement was inspiring, to see so many people come together to support such a great cause was incredible to see. To be side by side with strangers all walking together to raise money for this cause was amazing to be a part of. On behalf of myself I would really like to thank the team at Wyndarra for participating and of course the participants. The staff did not get paid for this, they volunteered and they did this because we are all here for the greater good of our participant.
Special mention to Dan for making it the whole way!
