Thomas Butler - Winner Excellence in Indigenous Programs

The Disability Trust would like to congratulate Thomas Butler on winning the NDS award for Excellence in Indigenous Programs.

Thomas is an Aboriginal Elder who has developed a culture group mentorship and support program with The Disability Trust, specifically designed for young indigenous men with a disability.

Using a blend of modern and traditional tools and techniques, Thomas assists the young men to develop their everyday life skills as well as providing education about their culture, language and health. In its third year, participants of the program have been able to engage at a deeper level with their own indigenous and non-indigenous communities, building stronger long term relationships.

“The Disability Trust would like to congratulate Thomas Butler on winning the NDS award for Excellence in Indigenous Programs.”

Winners and finalists in the 2017 NSW Disability Industry Innovation Awards were formally recognised on Thursday night during a ceremony at the Hilton, Sydney.

The ceremony was held at the conclusion of the first day of the NDS NSW State Conference and was attended by more than 200 guests from across the sector, including the Hon. Sophie Cotsis MP, Shadow Minister for Disability.

The Disability Industry Innovation Awards formally recognise and reward excellence and innovation demonstrated by people and organisations who work to improve outcomes for people with disability.

As the NDIS continues to roll out across the state and country, innovation has become particularly imperative as providers adjust and adapt to a changing landscape.

The judges of the Awards were Karen Bevan (CEO, Playgroup NSW), Shae Gibson (Project Manager, My Choice Matters), Mark Tonga (Chair, Disability Council NSW) and Jim Longley (Deputy Secretary of Ageing, Disability and Home Care).

NDS would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all winners and finalists for their exceptional commitment to the service of people with disability. A booklet showcasing the winners and finalists has been made available (PDF, Word) and photos from the ceremony will be available at the Awards website.
